BSG Solicitors have partnered with Cancer Research UK to offer free single or mirror Wills for anyone over the age of 55.
“Cancer Research UK is a charity close to our hearts at BSG and we’re very happy to have joined the scheme. We believe every adult should have a written Will to enable them to take control of what happens to their estate after their death. In the UK less than half of the adult population have a written Will. For unmarried couples the situation can be more complex as there is no such thing as a ‘common law’ marriage, so your assets won’t necessarily pass to your cohabitee.” said Emma Edwards, Solicitor at BSG.
The free Wills scheme covers the cost of a basic Will for anyone over the age of 55 and for a mirror Will with a partner just one person must be aged over 55. Whilst the majority of people who take up the offer do leave a legacy gift to the charity there is no obligation to do so.
Cancer Research UK Legacy Partnership Manager Alexis Fairclough said “Cancer Research UK relies heavily on people leaving gifts in their Wills to continue its life-saving work. Over a third of its research into finding better ways to treat, diagnose and prevent cancer is funded through legacy giving. Research has been responsible for saving nearly 520,000 lives in the UK since the 1980s and as the advances accelerate, Cancer Research UK is already laying the foundations for the next generation of cancer treatments that will save millions of lives worldwide.”
Progress in research has seen survival rates for children’s cancer more than double since the 1960s and men with testicular cancer having close to a 100 per cent chance of beating the disease. And women diagnosed with breast cancer are now twice as likely to survive their disease as those diagnosed 40 years ago.
Alexis explained: “We all reach a stage at some point in our lives when we start to look ahead and consider what will happen to our financial affairs when we’re no longer around. At Cancer Research UK we work with solicitors to offer a free Will service to anyone aged 55 or over, enabling individuals to make an all-important first Will or update an existing Will and we are delighted that BSG have decided to offer this service and work closely with us.”
